the-field-quartermaster-tactical-backpack
The Field Quartermaster | 35L Tactical Backpack with Air Cushion Harness

Load bearing is an engineering discipline. Comfort is the proof that it was done properly. A tactical pack is judged in the third hour, not the first, and the difference between a bag that is merely large and one that is genuinely carryable comes down to the harness. The Field Quartermaster carries 35 litres across an air-cushion belt system that spreads weight onto the hips rather than hanging it from the shoulders, so the pack stops pulling backward and starts sitting on the frame of the body.

The shell is a softback polyester build with a polyester lining and a full-length zipper closure down the main compartment, which lets the cavity open flat when you need to see everything at once rather than excavate from the top. Inside, three defined zones do the organising: a slot pocket for flat items, a zipper pocket for the small pieces that would otherwise migrate to the base, and a padded computer interlayer that keeps a laptop clear of the floor of the bag and away from the rest of the load.

Three colourways are available, black, green and khaki, and the detailing is kept to restrained embroidery rather than molle webbing by the metre. That is a deliberate choice. The pack is built to hold shape under load, with straps that stay where they are set and a body that does not slump when the main cavity is full. The soft handle carry strap and the menswear cut suit a wearer who loads the same kit week after week and wants the bag to disappear into the routine rather than require attention.

It is not a bag. Site engineers load instruments, a laptop and paperwork and then walk between buildings. Range officers and instructors carry PPE, documents and a first aid kit and need the load to sit still while they move. Field photographers want a padded layer between a camera body and the rest of the contents. Travellers use it as the one bag that covers a business trip and a hiking afternoon without a second purchase. In every case the requirement is identical: the weight has to transfer to the hips, and the interior has to be divided so that nothing has to be searched for.

Operators' Questions

Q: How much does the air cushion harness actually change?

It transfers the load from the shoulders and spine onto the hips.
