Description

Light should arrive only where a body is, and only while the body is there.

The Nightwatch Quad is built on that single constraint. Each of the four units carries a triple-sensing circuit that reads human presence, ambient darkness and movement together, sweeping a 120-degree detection field across three to five feet. Walk into the field in a dark room and the lamp comes on; stand still and it holds; step away and it drops out after fifteen seconds. That interval is the whole engineering argument. A light that stays on for five minutes wastes energy and wakes whoever is already in bed. A light that extinguishes the moment you stop moving leaves a corridor black while someone is still standing in it.

The housing is ABS with an LED source rated across a 249 to 2000 lumen band, fed by a 3.7 V rechargeable cell over USB. There is no wiring, no electrician, and no permanent commitment to a wall. Mounting is magnetic: an adhesive steel plate goes on the surface, the lamp snaps to it, and the light lifts off with one hand when the battery needs charging. That single decision is why the set works in rented flats, wardrobes, stairwells and van interiors where drilling a hole is either forbidden or simply unwanted. Three modes cover the full range of use: Off for storage, On for constant light, Auto for the motion-triggered behaviour the unit is designed around.

The set ships as four matched units, which matters more than it sounds. One goes above a stairway, one inside a wardrobe, one along a skirting board in a hallway, one at a bedside. Because each carries its own sensor and its own cell, they fail independently and charge independently; there is no hub, no app, no pairing ritual, and nothing to reconfigure when one unit is taken down to charge. Choose the 3-colour variant for a warm-to-neutral range that suits living spaces, or RGB if the light is meant to be part of the room rather than a utility.

It is not a lamp you switch on. It is a lamp that notices you.

Design decisions that change how it behaves

  • ✦ Dual-trigger sensing — human detection plus ambient light control, so the lamp ignores daylight and ignores stillness.
  • ✦ 120° detection field, 3–5 ft range — wide enough to catch a corridor, short enough not to fire from the next room.
  • ✦ 15-second auto-off — long enough to cross a hallway, short enough to keep a dark room dark.
  • ✦ Magnetic mounting — adhesive plate on the wall, lamp snaps on and lifts off for charging with one hand.
  • ✦ USB rechargeable, no wiring — nothing to install, nothing to hardwire, removable at the end of a tenancy.
  • ✦ Three modes — Off, constant On, and Auto for presence-triggered operation.
  • ✦ Four independent units — separate sensors and separate cells, so no hub and no single point of failure.

Where a presence-triggered light earns its cost

Stairwells are the classic case: a light that comes on at the top step and fades after the last footfall removes the single most common cause of a night-time fall without leaving a bulb burning until morning. Wardrobes and cupboards come second, because a magnetic unit lifts out and becomes a handheld light while you look for something at the back of a shelf. Rental flats and student rooms come third, since the adhesive plate peels off without a drill and the lamp goes with you when you move. Caregivers use the units along skirting boards in hallways to light a path to a bathroom without switching on an overhead fitting, and van and camper owners mount them on interior panels that would never accept a wired fixture.

Questions buyers ask

Q: How long does one charge last?

A: Runtime depends entirely on how often the sensor fires. In Auto mode a hallway unit typically lasts weeks between charges; a unit left in constant On mode will drain in days. The cell is removable with the lamp, so charging is a lift-off, not a rewire.

Q: Does it switch on in daylight?

A: No. The circuit reads ambient light as well as motion, so a sunlit room keeps the lamp off even when someone walks through it.

Q: Will the adhesive plate damage paint?

A: It is a standard foam-backed adhesive plate. On sealed paint it lifts cleanly with gentle heat; on fresh emulsion or delicate wallpaper, mount it to a tile, frame or skirting board instead.

Q: Can one unit be used without the sensor?

A: Yes. Set the mode to On and it behaves as a constant lamp, which is what most buyers do in a wardrobe or above a workbench.

Q: What is the difference between 3-Colour and RGB?

A: 3-Colour steps between warm, neutral and cool white for practical lighting. RGB adds full colour control for accent and ambient use.

Q: Are four units necessary?

A: The set is sold as four because a single unit rarely solves a whole route. Four covers a stair, a hallway and two cupboards, or one room used at four heights.

Good light, wish battery lasted longer

Bright for a night light and the RGB mode is fun in the hallway. In auto mode a charge lasts a couple of weeks in our stairwell. I would have liked a longer runtime but the magnetic mounting makes topping it up painless.

Sensing range is honest

The three to five foot range is accurate, which matters because I did not want them firing every time someone walked past the door. Charging is easy since the lamp lifts straight off the plate.

Stairs at night are solved

Stuck one above the first step and one in the hallway. They come on exactly when you are in front of them and go off before you reach the top. No wiring, no electrician, and the adhesive plates have held for three weeks on painted plaster.
