Description

Every engineer, every architect, every programmer traces their origin to a single moment: the first time they built something that moved. Before the degrees, before the career, before the lab coat — there was a plastic brick, a motor, and the dawning realization that the physical world could be commanded. The WeDo 3.0 is that moment, packaged into a system that scales from child play to teenage engineering.

Compatible with LEGO and LEGO Technic bricks, the WeDo 3.0 set includes programmable motors, sensors, and over 400 structural components that snap into anything a young mind can sketch on notebook paper. The Bluetooth hub connects to tablets and computers, where a drag-and-drop coding interface — Scratch-based, visual, and instantly rewarding — teaches logic, sequencing, and debugging without a single line of text. A child programs a robot arm to pick up a block. They do not know they are learning computational thinking. They only know the arm moved because they told it to.

This is the WeDo 2.0 successor that schools have been waiting for. More parts. More sensors. More project templates. More room for unsupervised discovery — the kind that happens when a child forgets dinner because they are debugging a gear train. The construction guide includes 15+ projects from simple mechanisms to multi-sensor autonomous vehicles. And because every component is LEGO-compatible, the WeDo 3.0 does not replace a brick collection — it supercharges it.

The first robot a child builds should not be virtual. It should be held, dropped, rebuilt, and celebrated.

Key Features

  • 400+ Building Components — Gears, axles, beams, connectors, wheels, and structural elements; fully compatible with LEGO and LEGO Technic bricks
  • Programmable Smart Hub — Bluetooth-enabled controller with built-in gyroscope and accelerometer; connects wirelessly to tablets, phones, and computers
  • Sensor Suite — Distance sensor, color sensor, tilt sensor, and touch sensor; teach feedback loops, obstacle detection, and conditional logic
  • Dual Motor Drive — Two independent motors enable differential steering, robotic arm actuation, and multi-axis movement
  • Scratch-Based Coding App — Visual drag-and-drop programming on iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac; zero text coding required, but supports Python for advanced students
  • 15+ Guided Projects — From simple motorized vehicles to sensor-driven autonomous robots; each project introduces a new engineering concept
  • Classroom-Ready Storage — Organized sorting tray keeps components accessible and teaches inventory management as a soft skill

Application Scenarios

The WeDo 3.0 lives wherever curiosity meets construction. Elementary and middle school STEM classrooms use it as the hands-on component of coding curriculum — students build and program within a single class period. Homeschooling parents deploy it as the engineering unit that makes screen-time productive. After-school robotics clubs run competitions where teams iterate on designs between rounds. Summer camps build entire week-long programs around the 15 guided projects, adding open-ended challenges for advanced groups. And the home tinkerer — the child who dismantles remote controls to see how they work — finds in the WeDo 3.0 a system that rewards that instinct with working robots instead of broken electronics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is this compatible with LEGO bricks we already own?

A: Yes. Every structural component in the WeDo 3.0 set uses the standard LEGO System and Technic connection interfaces. You can combine WeDo motors, sensors, and gears with any LEGO or LEGO Technic bricks your child already owns. The WeDo 3.0 does not replace a brick collection — it adds programmable motion and sensing to it.

Q: Does my child need to know how to code before using this?

A: No. The WeDo 3.0 coding app uses Scratch — a visual drag-and-drop language developed by MIT specifically for children with zero programming experience. Blocks snap together like puzzle pieces. A 7-year-old can build a working motorized vehicle within 15 minutes of opening the box. As skills grow, the same app supports Python for text-based programming.

Q: How is the WeDo 3.0 different from the WeDo 2.0?

A: The 3.0 adds more components (400+ vs. 280), an upgraded hub with gyroscope and accelerometer, additional sensors (color and touch were not in the base 2.0 set), dual motors instead of a single motor, and Bluetooth connectivity that supports modern tablets without the adapter cables the 2.0 required. It is a generational leap in both hardware and software.

Q: What devices are needed to program the robots?

A: The WeDo 3.0 coding app runs on iOS (iPad/iPhone), Android tablets and phones, Windows PCs, Macs, and Chromebooks. The smart hub connects via Bluetooth — no cables between the robot and the device. Most households already have a compatible device.

Q: Can multiple children use this at once?

A: The set supports pair programming (two children collaborating on one robot) and independent building (one child building while another programs). For classrooms, multiple WeDo 3.0 sets can operate simultaneously in the same room — each hub uses its own Bluetooth connection to a separate tablet or computer. No signal interference.

Great set, app could be more stable

The physical components are excellent — quality plastic, strong motors, responsive sensors. My twin 8-year-olds have built everything from a conveyor belt to a color-sorting machine. The coding app is good but occasionally crashes on our older iPad (2019 model). Works perfectly on a newer Android tablet. The guided projects do a great job of introducing each component one at a time. My only wish: more open-ended challenge cards for when the 15 guided projects are complete. Kids want to know what to build next!

Classroom tested, kid approved

I teach 5th grade STEM and bought 6 of these sets for my classroom. The build quality is excellent — 400+ pieces with clear project guides that scale from simple mechanisms to sensor-driven autonomous robots. Students who have never coded before are programming obstacle-avoidance robots by the end of the first week. The Bluetooth hub eliminates cable management chaos and the rechargeable battery lasts through multiple class periods. The sensors (distance, color, tilt, touch) introduce real engineering concepts — feedback loops, conditional logic, sensor fusion — in a way that feels like play. Best classroom investment I have made in years.

My 9-year-old built a robot in one afternoon

Bought this for my son 9th birthday and it was the hit of the party. Within 2 hours, he had built a motorized vehicle using the guided project and was already experimenting with different gear ratios to make it faster. The Scratch-based coding app is intuitive — drag-and-drop blocks that make logical sense to a child without any programming background. The fact that it is fully compatible with his existing LEGO collection means he immediately started adding his own creations to the WeDo chassis. This is what STEM education should look like — discovery-driven, not worksheet-driven.
