描述

A flashlight answers one question: is there light. A headlamp answers a harder one, which is what your hands are doing while the light is needed. That difference is engineering, not marketing. The Signal Peak is built around the assumption that the person wearing it is mid-task, mid-climb, or mid-repair, and that stopping to operate a switch is not an option. Ten emitters sit under one housing, and the interface is a rotary dial, a single button, and an infrared sensor that reads a wave of the hand. Nothing requires you to look at it.

The optical architecture is genuinely three instruments in one body. A single SFT40 emitter at 6000 to 6500 kelvin throws a spot beam that reaches 230 metres, which is the difference between seeing a trail marker and seeing a shape that might be one. Six CSP1919 emitters at 5000 kelvin produce a wide, even flood field for close work, where a hotspot is worse than useless because it hides everything outside its circle. Three HFL1-R red emitters preserve night vision and keep the beam from announcing your position. Spot and flood can run together, which is the setting most people end up leaving it on.

Under the LEDs sits a buck driver rather than a simple linear regulator, and that choice is why output stays flat as the 18650 cell drains instead of dimming in a slow slide from the first hour. The housing is AL6061-T6 aluminium at 87 grams without the cell, machined to 35.7 by 45.75 by 86.5 millimetres so it sits against the forehead without levering forward. USB-C charging means one cable covers the lamp and the phone in the same bag. Step-down regulation, aluminium, and a sealed body are the three things that separate a headlamp you keep for a decade from one you replace every season.

Light is not the product. Keeping both hands free is.

Design Notes

  • ✦ Triple light engine: SFT40 spot, six CSP1919 flood emitters, three HFL1-R red emitters
  • ✦ 230-metre beam distance from the 6000-6500K spot channel
  • ✦ Buck driver holds output steady as the cell voltage falls instead of fading linearly
  • ✦ Infrared gesture sensor changes brightness from a single wave, even through gloves
  • ✦ Rotary switch cycles light sources without requiring you to look at the housing
  • ✦ AL6061-T6 aluminium body at 87 grams without battery, USB-C rechargeable
  • ✦ Spot and flood can run simultaneously for near-field work with distance coverage

Where It Belongs

The use case that sells this lamp is not camping, which is the use case most headlamps are marketed with. It is work that requires both hands in the dark and a clear view at two distances at once: a mechanic under a chassis who needs a wide field at the bolts and a spot at the far end of the bay, a night fisherman re-tying a leader while watching the water, a caver or climber reading a route above the reach of a handheld beam, a homeowner tracing a fault through an unlit crawlspace. The red channel exists for anyone who needs to preserve dark adaptation, from astronomers to hunters moving before first light. Because output stays regulated, the beam does not quietly degrade halfway through the task, which matters more than peak lumens on a specification sheet.

Questions, Answered

Q: How long does the battery last?

A: Runtime depends on the selected output level and whether spot and flood run together. Expect roughly two hours at maximum combined output and well beyond a full night at the low and red settings. A spare 18650 weighs almost nothing and removes the question entirely.

Q: Can I use my own 18650 cells?

A: Yes, provided the cell is a genuine high-drain 18650 rated for the current draw. Protected and unprotected cells both fit. Avoid low-quality cells, which will trigger the driver protection circuit under load.

Q: Does the gesture sensor work with gloves?

A: Yes. The infrared sensor reads proximity rather than touch, so a wave works through work gloves, cycling gloves, or a wet hand. It can also be disabled if you prefer manual control only.

Q: Is it waterproof?

A: The housing is sealed and rated for rain and splashing. It is not intended for submersion, so do not use it as a dive light.

Q: Can it run while charging?

A: Yes, USB-C pass-through is supported, which makes it usable as a fixed work light on a long job with a power bank attached.

Q: Does the red light preserve night vision?

A: The red channel is designed for exactly that. It provides enough illumination to move and read without constricting the pupils, which is why it is the preferred setting for astronomy, wildlife observation, and pre-dawn hunting.

Heavier than a plastic lamp, worth it

It weighs noticeably more than the plastic headlamp I had before, and the aluminium body is why. Once it is on your head the weight balances out and the heat sinking is clearly better. Red channel is genuinely useful for pre-dawn work and does not ruin your eyes.

Output actually stays flat

The difference between this and the cheap headlamp it replaced is the driver. It holds brightness as the cell drains instead of sliding down in the first half hour, so a four hour job does not end with me squinting. The 230 metre throw on the spot channel is real, not a spec sheet claim.

The wave sensor is not a gimmick

I bought this for the gesture control and assumed it would be a novelty. Three weeks of night fishing later it is the feature I use most, because my hands are wet and gloved and I never have to find a button. Spot and flood together is the setting I leave it on.
