描述

A timing belt job has one moment where everything can go wrong. The belt is off, the cam has nothing holding it, and a cam that rotates two degrees under valve spring pressure turns a two hour job into a head removal. The tool that prevents it costs less than the gasket set you would need afterwards.

This is a five piece set of camshaft retainers in carbon steel with plastic contact faces. The design is deliberately universal rather than vehicle specific: it covers most single overhead cam engines, twin cam engines and four cam layouts by holding the camshaft in place while the belt is changed. Universal means it fits most things adequately and nothing perfectly, which is exactly the trade a mobile mechanic wants.

The compact profile is the other half of the argument. Engine bays have shrunk, and a tool that cannot reach the cam because the radiator support is in the way is a tool that stays in the box. These sit low enough to work in the space you actually have, and the plastic faces protect the cam lobes from the marks that a bare steel jaw leaves behind.

The cheapest tool in the box is the one that stops you removing a cylinder head. Buy it before you need it.

What The Five Pieces Cover

  • ✦Five piece set covering single, twin and four camshaft layouts
  • ✦Carbon steel body with plastic contact faces that protect cam lobes
  • ✦Compact profile for access in tight engine bays
  • ✦Holds cams at correct valve timing while the belt is off the engine
  • ✦Reduces repair time by removing the need to re-time from scratch
  • ✦Prevents the valve to piston contact that follows a slipped cam
  • ✦Suits mobile mechanics working across mixed vehicle fleets

The Job It Exists For

It belongs in the tool bag of anyone who changes timing belts on more than one make: independent garages, mobile mechanics, and the home mechanic with two or three cars in the household. It is also the tool a cambelt kit does not include, which is why so many jobs stall at the point of reassembly. Beyond belts, the retainers are useful during camshaft seal replacement and valve cover work where the cam must stay indexed.

Fitment Questions

Q: Will this fit my specific engine?

A: These are universal retainers, not vehicle specific tools. They cover most single, twin and four cam layouts, but a modern engine with a narrow cam bridge and very little clearance may need the manufacturer tool. Check the gap between the cam and the head before you start the job.

Q: Is it strong enough for a seized cam?

A: The retainers hold a cam that has rotated under spring pressure, which is their design case. They are not a breaker bar and should never be used to force a seized camshaft to turn. If the cam will not move by hand, stop and diagnose rather than loading the tool.

Q: Do the plastic faces really protect the lobes?

A: Yes, and that is the reason they exist. A bare steel jaw tightened against a hardened cam lobe leaves a mark that becomes a stress point. The plastic face distributes the load and is a consumable, so expect to replace inserts after heavy use.

Q: Can I use them to hold the crank as well?

A: These are camshaft retainers. The crank has its own locking tools and a different access path. Using a cam tool on the crank risks damaging both the tool and the timing mark reference.

Q: Will it work on a V6 with four cams?

A: On many four cam layouts yes, one retainer per cam where access allows. On tightly packaged V engines you may only reach two cams at a time, which is still enough if you work methodically and mark positions before removing the belt.

Q: What else should I have on hand for a belt change?

A: A torque wrench, a crank holding tool, new idler and tensioner hardware, and paint marks on the old belt and sprockets before disassembly. The retainer stops the cam drifting, but your reference marks are what tell you it went back correctly.

Q: Is the set magnetic?

A: The steel body is not magnetised, which matters because a magnetised tool collects ferrous dust that then finds its way into oil galleries. Keep the pieces clean and stored together, since a single missing retainer makes the set useless for a four cam job.

Q: How do I know the cam is actually locked?

A: Seat the retainer against the cam flat with the tool body resting on a solid reference surface, then try to rotate the cam gently by hand. Any movement means the tool is bearing on air rather than on the casting. Re-seat before touching the belt.

Universal means it fits most things, not everything

On a tightly packaged four cam engine I could only reach two cams at a time, so I worked methodically and marked positions first. It still saved me from re-timing from scratch. Worth checking clearance before you start the job.

For the price it should be in every tool bag

I run a mobile service and this set has covered three different makes in a month. Nothing vehicle specific about it, which is the point when you do not know what is on the driveway next. Carbon steel body has not bent under spring load.

Held the cams on a twin cam belt change without drama

The retainer sat against the cam flat with the body resting on the head casting and the cam did not drift a degree while the belt was off. Compact enough to reach past the radiator support. The plastic faces left no marks on the lobes.
